The strawberry jam my son and I made yesterday afternoon is still a bit runny this morning. Of course we didn't boil it enough, but also, the recipe we followed (from the Ball Blue Book of Preserving) called only for strawberries and sugar -- in other words, if I understand what you've written here, it was more like a preserve recipe. Anyway, without knowing by sight or feel, I processed the batch too early.

No matter -- sight and feel comes in time. I'm going to try a different recipe tonight, one that has some lemon zest and juice in it, though no pectin.

No, I used a hatchet. But then I was all literary about it. Sort of negates the virile manliness of the thing. I should just have grunted.

Being a grumpy but reliable old New England woman is something to which we should all aspire -- it's beyond gender. And I believe I have read a post of yours, on another website, in which you did kill a small animal with your bare hands. So that's covered.

Well, next time I'll write about something more masculine, like killing small animals with my bare hands.

You know, you could easily pass for a grumpy but reliable old New England woman.

We are supposed to pick up a couple quarts of strawberries while we still can and make some preserves from them. I will try to keep the sugar content low.

Thanks for writing about this -- it'll be helpful.
